What Is Precision Sand Casting?
At Protocast, we pride ourselves on manufacturing high-quality metal components. We use a number of complementary processes, including die casting, CNC machining, and precision sand casting. In today’s blog post from Protocast in Commerce City, we are going to discuss what precision sand casting is. Read on to learn more.
What Exactly Is Sand Casting?
To put it simply, precision sand casting, also sometimes referred to as no-bake sand, utilizes a sand mold to form metal parts. At Protocast, we use a fine grain sand combined with a urethane binder to make our sand castings, allowing us to have thicker walls and produce a superior product.
The Sand Casting Process
We begin by creating a model of the part we will be molding. We then hand pack the fine grain sand mixture into the mold master. Once the binder has set, we pour molten metal into the mold. We allow the metal to cool to an ambient temperature and then break off the casting. We then clean up the casting by hand.
Common Applications of Sand Casting
Precision sand casting is often used in the automotive industry. It’s ideal for smaller parts such as pulleys, gears, and crankshafts, as well as larger parts, such as transmission cases and engine shafts. The process of precision of sand casting makes it perfect for creating exact parts that are solid metal, making them reliable and durable.
What Makes Protocast Sand Casting Different
At Protocast, we utilize innovative technology and software to create our models. This software takes into account shrinkage and gating, to ensure the finished product is exactly what you’re looking for. We then carry out the other steps by hand, such as packing the sand and cleaning up the casting.
