Rapid Investment Casting with Magnesium Alloy
Rapid Investment Casting is one of the most innovative casting processes that we use at Prototype Casting Inc. We are able to perform these services thanks to 3D wax pattern printing which not only allows us to efficiently produce complete wax patterns but enables us to do so with only a fraction of the cost of a Direct Metal Laser Sintering (DMLS) process. In addition, the convenience of rapid investment casting allows for shorter casting time and faster shipping.
The Process
The casting process begins with the 3D wax pattern printing of up to an 8x8x7 inch printing envelope which is then primed for molding. Once a mold has been created, metal alloys such as aluminum, zinc, and magnesium are poured into the 3D form.
Choosing the appropriate metal for your casting needs is essential. Our process is appropriate for aluminum, zinc, stainless steel, and magnesium. Each alloy varies in casting tolerance based on individual composition geometry. While stainless steel produces the thickest walls in a cast and zinc has the thinnest, magnesium is the lightest structural metal to be used in casting with a median casting tolerance. Compared to many other alloys, magnesium is also one of the purest alloys. These features of magnesium are best used for casting components in camera bodies, block engines, modern automobile components, and even high-performance vehicle parts.
